Staff Engineer, Mobile Applications (Android)
Role Overview
This is a hybrid role, with an expectation to be on site at least 2 days per week in our Cork office.
As a Staff Engineer on NETGEAR's mobile applications team, you will be an experienced, hands-on Android engineer who takes ownership of complex features and initiatives across our mobile experience. This role has a huge impact on consumers - you'll be shaping the app experience for millions of people who rely on it to manage their home networks every day. Working with a high degree of independence, you will drive medium to large technical initiatives that span mobile, embedded, and cloud systems, influence the design of complex parts of the codebase, and help raise the engineering bar across the team.
We are looking for someone with deep platform expertise and, just as importantly, a customer-centric mentality, a strong sense of ownership and autonomy, and high-quality standards. You bring a can-do attitude, genuine curiosity, and the adaptability to thrive in a fast-changing environment - approaching problems with a bias for action, actively seeking out better tools and ways of working, and staying positive and productive as products and priorities evolve. AI-augmented development - using AI tools for code generation, automated test generation, and code review - is a core part of how you work, not an occasional aid.
You will also mentor other engineers and help shape a culture of technical excellence and continuous learning.
Responsibilities
• Design and develop features across NETGEAR's Android applications, with a focus on scalability, performance, and usability
• Take ownership of medium to large initiatives end to end, coordinating with cloud and embedded counterparts to deliver cohesive product experiences
• Own the quality of your features end to end, including hands-on testing and building automated test coverage (unit, integration, and UI)
• Apply sound engineering judgement to solve complex problems in the codebase, and propose improved methods and approaches
• Lead architectural discussions and help shape the technical direction of the app
• Own and improve best practices, including code reviews, CI/CD pipelines, release automation, and DevOps workflows (e.g. GitHub Actions)
• Bring a can-do, solution-focused mindset to team challenges, and actively seek out new tools, ideas, and ways of working
• Mentor and support engineers across the team, acting as a technical leader and force multiplier
• Set clear objectives and deliver measurable results aligned with quarterly goals
Qualifications
• 8+ years of Android development, with strong Kotlin and Java experience, including technical leadership on cross-functional projects or initiatives
• Strong knowledge of Android OS architecture, platform services, and system-level integrations
• Solid design, architectural, and analytical problem-solving skills, with experience building scalable, testable, reusable applications in complex technical environments
• Proficiency in Material Design and building modern, responsive, user-centric UIs
• Strong proficiency working with AI-augmented development workflows - using AI tools effectively for code generation, automated test generation, and code review, as a core part of the SDLC (tool-agnostic, not tied to any specific product)
• Strong experience designing, maintaining, and improving DevOps pipelines and tools (e.g. GitHub, GitHub Actions, Fastlane), automation, and secure software delivery
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent hands-on experience
Preferred Qualifications
• Familiarity with Node.js, JavaScript, Python, and/or cross-platform frameworks (React Native, Flutter), including the ability to build and maintain Backend-for-Frontend (BFF) layers
• Experience with IoT systems or integrations involving Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or networking hardware
• Experience working across mobile, embedded, and cloud systems to build cohesive product experiences
• Experience developing clients for APIs and microservices
• Experience with subscription-based product models (in-app purchases, billing and entitlement flows)
• Candidates with experience across both iOS and Android are a strong plus
• Strong communicator, able to articulate technical direction to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Experience improving developer productivity through build optimisation, observability, release governance, or pipeline security
Eligibility to live and work in Ireland is required. We are unable to offer visa sponsorship or relocation support for these roles.
