Automation & Tooling Designer (Shift-Based)

Zejtun, MaltaFull TimePosted Jul 20, 2026

We are looking for a skilled and hands-on CAD/CAM Technician to join our Development Team as an Automation & Tooling Designer. This role offers a unique balance between design engineering and practical manufacturing, allowing the successful candidate to take ownership of projects from concept through to implementation.

The selected candidate will be responsible for designing components for automation equipment and tooling, while also manufacturing many of these components using CNC machining technologies. The role operates on a 2-shift basis to provide technical support and development capability across extended production hours.

Key Responsibilities

Design & Development

  • Design and develop fixtures, machine components, assembly tooling, and automation parts for new automation projects and upgrades to existing equipment.
  • Perform on-site measurements and dimensional verification to ensure accurate and practical designs.
  • Create detailed 3D CAD models, assemblies, and manufacturing drawings.
  • Produce and evaluate 3D-printed prototypes before final machining and implementation.
  • Design EDM electrodes for mould insert repair, modification, and maintenance activities.
  • Collaborate with the Quality Department to design and develop inspection jigs, gauges, and poka-yoke devices.
  • Work closely with Automation, Production, Quality, and Tool Room personnel to develop effective technical solutions.

Manufacturing & Machining

  • Program and manufacture designed components using CNC milling machines and lathes.
  • Generate machining programs using CAM software such as Edgecam.
  • Set up, operate, and optimize CNC machines to produce high-quality components.
  • Verify machined parts against design specifications and quality requirements.
  • Support the assembly, testing, installation, and commissioning of newly developed automation solutions.
  • Carry out modifications and improvements to existing equipment and tooling as required.

We are looking for an individual who enjoys both the technical creativity of design and the practical satisfaction of manufacturing their own solutions.

Requirements

  • Proven experience using 3D CAD software ( Autodesk Inventor, Autocad or similar).
  • Experience with CAM programming software, preferably Edgecam.
  • Strong practical knowledge of CNC milling and CNC turning operations.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and GD&T requirements.
  • Experience in machining, tooling, fixture design, or automation-related projects.
  • Familiarity with 3D printing technologies and prototype development.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Good communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Willingness to work on a 2-shift rotation basis.

What We Offer

  • A highly varied role combining engineering design and hands-on manufacturing.
  • The opportunity to develop innovative automation and tooling solutions from concept to reality.
  • Exposure to modern CNC machining, CAD/CAM technologies, and industrial automation projects.
  • A collaborative and dynamic engineering environment.
  • Professional development opportunities and continuous technical learning.
  • Competitive remuneration package based on experience and qualifications.

About the Role

This position is ideal for a technically minded individual who enjoys seeing their ideas come to life. Unlike traditional CAD positions, this role offers the opportunity to not only design solutions but also manufacture, test, and implement them. The successful candidate will become a key contributor to the company's automation, tooling, and continuous improvement initiatives.
