Registered Practical Nurse – Hospital Overflow Program 
Position Type: Full-Time OR Part-Time, Time-Limited Contract until September 30, 2026 
Start Date: July 27, 2026  

Schedule: Overnight shifts (11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.); up to 40 hours per week on a regular shift 
schedule across the week  
Reporting to: Program Manager, Hospital Overflow Program 
Compensation: $60,000 per annum for full time pro-rated for duration of contract  
Union Representation: CUPE Local 7797  


Since 1933, Haven Toronto has been a drop-in centre where elderly homeless, marginally housed 
and socially isolated men can feel safe, where they can form and cultivate friendships, and 
become part of a community. Our vision is a safe and just community in which elder homeless 
men can live a quality and dignified life.  


Summary:

The RPN will work as part of the overnight program at Haven Toronto, a program of St. 
Michael’s Homes, delivered in collaboration with St. Michael’s Hospital, Michael Garron Hospital, 
and the East Toronto Health Partners OHT. Clients who visit emergency departments but do not 
need urgent medical care are redirected to Haven Toronto for safe overnight rest, basic support, 
and monitoring. The RPN provides onsite clinical assessment, basic nursing care, and oversight to 
ensure client safety and continuity of care throughout the night.  


Key Responsibilities  
• Work independently, under the guidance of Haven Toronto nursing clinic directives, and in 
consultation with other primary care providers or other relevant inter-professional team 
members, as appropriate. 
• Orient clients to medical services and support a welcoming, non-judgmental and safe space. 
• Provide client-centred general nursing care for clients from diverse populations, establishing a 
therapeutic relationship and developing rapport. 
• Perform assessments, develop, implement and evaluate the inter-professional plan of care for 
clients with a wide range of diagnoses. This often involves connecting with MDs on behalf of 
clients and communicating relevant information on the client’s behalf (with their consent). 
• Address common concerns including foot care, acute and chronic wound care, mental health 
support and diabetes. 
• Support clients enrolled in the STOP program, a smoking cessation program. 
Training will be required through CAMH. 
• Provide over the counter medication as required, counselling about the use, dose and function 
of various OTC’s. 
• Follow documented protocols and maintain clear, accurate and timely written documentation in 
accordance with established procedures and policies of their respective regulatory bodies, the 
Ministry of Health and Haven Toronto. 
• Prepare and maintain statistical data, correspondence reports, and other documentation. 
• Identify trends or issues related to the health status of clients, using this information in service 
planning and to anticipate health-related programs that could help clients. Advocate for new 
program initiatives. 
• Liaise with other Haven Toronto and community partners and participate in knowledge 
exchange/transfer activities, on occasion and in consultation with the management team.

Qualifications: 
• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required, RPN License required. 
• Current CPR and First Aid certification required. 
• Knowledgeable regarding the nursing process and its application, including the assessment, 
planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care. 
• Ability to work in a substance use treatment context; solid understanding of addictions, 
including alcohol and opioid use disorders. 
• Experience with clients with mental health/concurrent disorders an asset. 
• High degree of resourcefulness, flexibility and adaptability. 
• Ability to work with a variety of client presenting situations, personalities and level of ability 
• Able to work both on a team and independently 
• Demonstration of critical thinking and prioritization skills. 
• Significant front-line nursing harm reduction experience: values aligned with a harm reduction 
and trauma-informed approach to service delivery. 
• Nursing experience caring for individuals with mental illness and/or addiction issues is required. 
• Experience in wound care and foot care. 
• Proficiency in the use of computer technology and various software applications. 
• Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to listen actively and accurately. 
• Proven ability to develop strong relationships based on trust and integrity. 
• Demonstrated the ability to exercise good judgement and decision-making 
• Ability to work creatively, resourcefully, and effectively. 
• Leads with humility and has self-awareness and authenticity. 
• Passion for working for an organization where you can use your abilities to have a big impact. 
• Willingness to roll up your sleeves and do what it takes to get the job done. 
• The ability to operate with minimal oversight. 
• Excellent organizational skills and able to work effectively in a fast-paced environment 
• A working knowledge of client management systems/electronic health records. 
• The ability to provide services in both English and French a definite asset
