About the Role
We’re looking for a General Superintendent, Mission Critical to provide portfolio-wide field leadership across RNGD’s data center, critical infrastructure, and power sector work. This is a senior field leadership and sector wide position rather than a single-project assignment. The role establishes one Mission Critical field operating system, builds the superintendent bench that growth depends on, and gives sector leadership a field partner capable of carrying execution as the portfolio expands geographically. The General Superintendent is expected to spend most of the week in the field, coaching field leaders and verifying readiness on jobsites, rather than directing from an office.
Purpose of the Role
The General Superintendent, Mission Critical is the leader accountable for how work is executed in the field across data centers, critical infrastructure, power, and other technically intensive projects. The position exists to establish one field operating system where individual projects currently operate in different ways, to develop the next generation of superintendents and field leaders, and to give the Sector Leader a field partner capable of carrying execution across a growing and geographically expanding portfolio.
The role is a leadership and operating position. It leads integrated field execution; it does not replace the technical authority of design engineers, trade experts, commissioning authorities, qualified vendors, or client operations teams. This position brings field credibility sufficient to lead those experts, the discipline to install and hold standards, and the presence to coach in the field every week.
Scope and Reporting
Reports to the Sector Leader, Mission Critical.
Scope includes field execution across data centers, critical infrastructure, high-availability facilities, central utility plants, network and technology facilities, and other technically intensive projects, including work performed adjacent to or within live and operating environments.
Project superintendents and area superintendents report to this position for field execution, planning, staffing, development, and performance. They maintain a dotted-line relationship to the project executives and operations leaders accountable for project P&L, contracts, and client commitments.
The General Superintendent partners with project management, safety, quality, scheduling, and preconstruction, and coordinates with the Trades and Manufacturing sectors wherever self-perform scope, prefabrication, and multi-trade Components are installed. Those sectors are supported by this role, not directed by it.
The General Superintendent, Mission Critical, the General Superintendent, Commercial Construction, and the General Superintendent, Trades carry equal enterprise influence within their respective sectors and are expected to operate as one field leadership team.
Core Accountabilities
Portfolio Mission Critical Field Operating Standards
- Define, publish, and enforce common Mission Critical field expectations, beginning with daily reports, daily plans, short-interval planning, constraint logs, production tracking, and weekly staffing plans.
- Hold the standards consistently while adapting execution models to project type, client program, delivery method, and market.
- Keep standards simple enough to execute, visible enough to inspect, and supported by coaching in the field rather than by reporting alone.
- Align field standards with client program requirements, standardized designs, and repeatable build sequences across a multi-site program.
Superintendent Staffing, Deployment, Development, and Succession
- Own the assignment and deployment of project and area, across the portfolio, matching capability and technical complexity.
- Maintain a field-staffing forecast reconciled to backlog, award timing, and milestone dates, and flag recruiting, training, or supplemental needs early.
- Assist to coach and build advancement pathways from field engineer through area superintendent, MEP superintendent, superintendent, senior superintendent, and general superintendent.
- Maintain named succession and development plans for every critical field-leadership seat, and track retention, turnover, and bench readiness by project and region.
Advanced Planning, Work Packaging, and Constraint Management
- Require detailed advanced planning before mobilization, including work packages tied to areas and systems, sequencing, logistics, material, equipment, access, information, and readiness conditions.
- Verify readiness before each phase, area, and system release, and withhold release when readiness conditions are not credible.
- Own the field portion of schedule recovery, including resequencing, staffing, shift strategy, and constraint removal.
Multi-Discipline and Systems Integration
- Lead the integration systems into one field sequence.
- Drive coordination and installation sequencing, so field conflicts are resolved before installation.
- Manage owner-furnished and vendor-furnished equipment interfaces, including delivery windows, storage, protection, and installation readiness.
- Coordinate long-lead equipment, utility interfaces, and permanent power milestones with the project and client teams.
Area-Based and System-Based Completion
- Install an area-based and system-based completion structure so the field plans, tracks, and completes work by area and by system rather than by trade alone.
- Sequence trade work, inspections, and verification so each area and system reaches completion in the order the startup plan requires.
- Align field completion structure with the commissioning and turnover plan from the beginning of the project.
Equipment Setting, Startup, Energization, and Commissioning Readiness
- Own field readiness for equipment setting, alignment, terminations, point-to-point checks, and pre-functional testing.
- Ensure the field delivers complete, clean, documented, and ready, with deficiencies closed before handoff.
High-Risk Work and Operational Interfaces
- Set field expectations for high-risk work including energized systems, lockout/tagout, stored energy, boundaries, confined space, critical lifts, and work at height.
- Govern field interfaces with live and operating environments, including tie-ins, shutdowns, and methods of procedure.
- Stop field work when safety, supervision, information, material, access, isolation, or readiness conditions are not credible.
Progressive Quality Completion and Deficiency Management
- Establish progressive quality completion so inspections, verifications, and sign-offs occur as work is installed rather than at the end of the project.
- Own first-work reviews, mockups, benchmark installations, inspection readiness, and rework accountability across the portfolio.
- Run a deficiency and punch process by area and system, with owners, dates, and closure evidence.
- Ensure quality problems are visible, corrected at the source, and learned from across projects and programs.
Vendor, Trade Partner, Utility, and Client Coordination
- Set the field expectations trade partners are held to, including manpower commitments, planning participation, quality, safety, documentation, and cleanup.
- Coordinate equipment vendors, factory technicians, utility providers, testing agencies, and the commissioning team into the field sequence and site logistics plan.
- Partner with client operations and facility teams on access, security, escorting, badging, and operational constraints.
- Integrate RNGD self-perform and Trades scope into the project sequence and provide the conditions those crews need to perform.
Phased Turnover, Training, Documentation, and Operational Readiness
- Lead field execution of phased turnover so areas and systems are handed over in the sequence the client’s operational plan requires.
- Support integrated systems testing, owner training, and demonstration events with field access, staffing, and system availability.
- Drive completion of field documentation including as-built information, test records, labeling, and closeout packages as a condition of turnover, not after it.
- Support the client’s operational readiness process and confirm the field has delivered what operations requires to accept and run the facility.
Preconstruction Involvement, Constructability, and Project Startup
- Represent field execution in pursuits, preconstruction, and constructability reviews so estimates, durations, and sequences reflect real production and supervision needs.
- Review logistics, phasing, work packaging, energization sequence, and commissioning durations before award and identify field risk early.
- Lead a consistent project startup process covering staffing, standards, logistics, schedule, safety, quality, and readiness expectations.
Geographic Growth and Field Leadership Capacity
- Develop Mission Critical field-leadership coverage and mobilization plans for new geographies, campuses, and client programs.
- Maintain a capacity view that ties field-leadership depth to the volume the sector intends to build.
- Establish local field standards, onboarding, and supervision structures in new regions and on new multi-site programs.
Field Leadership Operating Rhythm
- Run a consistent cadence with superintendents focused on safety, quality, staffing, production, constraints, readiness, leadership development, and upcoming work.
- Spend most of the week on jobsites, with office time reserved for planning, staffing, and leadership commitments.
- Develop field leaders who solve at the lowest appropriate level rather than routing every issue upward.
Decision Rights
A role without authority adds coordination but not accountability. The following decision rights are explicit and are field decision rights:
- Sets Mission Critical field operating standards across the portfolio and requires compliance.
- Holds final field operating authority when superintendents, trades, or vendors disagree on execution sequence, with commercial and client matters escalated to the Sector Leader and technical matters to the responsible technical authority.
- Approves project field staffing plans and superintendent assignments across the portfolio in coordination with project executives.
- Reallocates field leadership and self-perform resources across projects when demand competes.
- Approves site logistics, work packaging, and phasing plans and confirms mobilization readiness at project start.
- Approves field readiness for area and system release, equipment setting, and handoff to commissioning, within the technical acceptance criteria set by others.
- Stops mobilization, adjacent work, or any field work when safety, isolation, information, material, access, supervision, or readiness conditions are not credible.
- Carries a substantive voice in the selection, promotion, succession, and performance review of field leadership.
Preferred Qualifications
- 10+ years of construction experience, including 2+ years leading data center, critical infrastructure, or other high-availability projects as a superintendent or senior superintendent.
- Experience leading field execution across more than one project at a time, or across a portfolio, campus, region, or multi-site client program.
- Proven record of installing advanced planning, work packaging, constraint management, and progressive quality completion systems and holding them in place.
- Track record of developing superintendents and field engineers and of attracting and retaining field talent.
- Proficiency with construction management platforms, scheduling tools, model coordination, and commissioning and completion-tracking systems.
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent field experience.
- Willingness to spend most of the week in the field and to travel as the portfolio expands.
