HSE Officer
WHAT IS ON OFFER
Alfred H Knight has an exciting opportunity for a HSE Officer to join our team in Johannesburg. This individual will offer support, as directed, on day-to-day operations and assist in ensuring all work is executed in line with Safety Legislation and ISO 17025. You will be a support function for all staff on HSE-related matters ensuring the Company’s H&S policy and legislative requirements are adhered to effectively in all areas of the business. You will provide a high-level report on health monitoring, incident statistics, site-inspection reports, nonconformances and corrective action monitoring, project progress, HSE audits etc. Maintain a professional standard and appearance during office hours when interacting with colleagues on various levels and or while promoting the company when on company business.

To be successful at Alfred H Knight you will need to display the following:
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND WORK EXPERIENCE
Essential
- HSE Management and Compliance: Implement, maintain and continuously improve HSE policies, procedures and management systems, ensuring compliance with applicable legislation, ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 requirements.
- Audits, Inspections and Risk Management: Conduct internal audits, site inspections and risk assessments, identify non-conformances, and monitor the implementation and effectiveness of corrective actions.
- Incident Management: Lead and coordinate accident and incident investigations, monitor incident trends and statistics, and report significant HSE or legislative compliance failures to management.
- HSE Support and Legal Requirements: Provide HSE guidance and support to management and employees, while maintaining legal appointments, certificates, contractor safety documentation and other statutory requirements.
- Health Monitoring and Employee Safety: Coordinate medical surveillance requirements and support initiatives aimed at protecting employee health and safety.
- Training and Communication: Develop and deliver HSE inductions, safety awareness programmes, toolbox talks and other communications to ensure employees understand HSE requirements and changes.
- Reporting and Documentation: Maintain controlled HSE documents and records, prepare monthly HSE reports, and compile information for management reviews and HSE meetings.
- Continuous Improvement and Coordination: Coordinate HSE committee meetings and work closely with management and operational teams to achieve HSE objectives and drive continuous improvement.
Required Competencies
- Communication and Computer Skills: Highly proficient in English, both written and verbal, with good communication skills and computer literacy.
- HSE Knowledge and Application: Good knowledge and understanding of Occupational Health and Safety legislation, regulations and HSE requirements, with the ability to apply these effectively in the workplace.
- Planning and Time Management: Strong organisational, time-management and prioritisation skills, with the ability to manage workloads and meet deadlines.
- Quality and Attention to Detail: A strong commitment to accuracy and a “right first time” approach, with high attention to detail and a focus on continuous improvement.
- Problem Solving and Critical Thinking: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to exercise sound judgement, make decisions and work independently with minimal supervision.
- Resilience and Professional Judgement: Ability to work effectively under pressure, manage uncertainty and challenges in a professional and mature manner
Required Work Experience
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in a production, mining operations or laboratory environment, with a proven track record of implementing and maintaining HSE requirements.
Required Qualifications
- Diploma or qualification in Health and Safety Management; NEBOSH IGC would be advantageous.
- Advanced knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, relevant legislation and HSE management systems, including ISO 45001 and ISO 14001.
- Competency in legal liability, incident investigation, COIDA, hazard identification and risk assessment.
Required Language
- Proficiency in English, both written and verbal.
