Senior Accountant

Our Mission:

At Happiest Baby, we're on a mission to help parents raise healthy, happy children and save lives.  We're the creators of SNOO, the world's first smart sleeper and the safest baby bed ever made, proven to add 1-2 hours of sleep per night.  With a legacy of developing landmark products, content, and services, our work is recognized and exhibited in some of the world's top art museums, including the SF MOMA and the London Design Museum.  Under the leadership of our CEO, Dr. Harvey Karp, a renowned pediatrician, and author of the best-seller, “Happiest Baby on the Block,” we're a mission-driven company looking to expand our team with passionate, dedicated individuals.

Your Role:

As a Senior Accountant at Happiest Baby, you will be instrumental in managing the accounting for our financial processes, including the order to cash cycle, revenue recognition, inventory tracking, and sales tax/VAT filings.  Reporting directly to the VP, Finance and Accounting, this role requires a mix of advanced excel skills, analytical prowess, accounting knowledge, and organizational skills to support our finance department's efficiency and accuracy.

In this role you will also pair that accounting work with modern automation and AI tooling.  You will use Claude and Python to rebuild subledgers, automate reconciliations and roll-forwards, and build documented, auditable processes that make our monthly close and our audit preparation faster and more reliable.  You are equally comfortable in a reconciliation and in a script, and you care as much about a process being understood and maintainable as about it working once.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and optimize the accounting and analyses for the order to cash cycle and revenue recognition process for retail and rental lines of business across US and international markets.
  • Properly record and account for inventory procurement workflow from inventory receipts to shipments and transfers, essentially accounting for all inventory movements in QuickBooks.
  • Assist in the monthly closing process, including journal entries, balance sheet analyses and reconciliations, and other financial analyses.
  • Participate in annual physical inventory counts and support the monthly financial close cycle with reconciliations and analyses.
  • Prepare data and documents for sales tax and VAT filings, coordinating with outside firms, and ensuring timely reconciliations of related accounts.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and data accuracy.
  • Contribute to the financial audit process and preparation of required audit support schedules.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with departments such as Operations and Marketing to provide data support and ensure accurate financial reporting and alignment of business objectives.
  • Assist in the evaluation and implementation of accounting software and systems upgrades to support evolving business needs. Engage in continuous learning and development to enhance skills and adapt to Happiest Baby's dynamic environment.
  • Automate and optimize accounting workflows. Rebuild manual reconciliations, journal entry preparation, roll-forwards, tie-outs, and reporting packages as automated, documented processes using Claude for Excel, and Claude Code, and where applicable Python, reducing close-cycle time and error rates while improving auditability.
  • Rebuild and integrate subledgers. Rebuild and maintain subledgers (rental-asset, fixed-asset, and inventory) that pull and reconcile data from disparate systems and files, building serial-level or transaction-level traceability where the business requires it and reconciling back to the general ledger.
  • Document every process. Turn each automation into a repeatable, documented standard operating procedure (SOP) that another accountant, not just the author, can run, with clear control descriptions and version control so processes survive turnover and satisfy auditors.
  • Govern AI use responsibly. Operate under the company's data-security and AI-governance policies: consume from the company data warehouse rather than standing up redundant local extracts, keep no personal data on local machines, and build review and validation points into AI-assisted work.
  • Support the 2024 and 2025 audit-readiness effort. Prepare annual roll-forward files that tie to the monthly reconciliations, and produce the integrated, transaction-level support the auditors can make sample selections against.
  • Rebuild the rental-asset subledger and serial trace, and roll forward accumulated depreciation and disposals on rental assets.
  • Reconstruct inventory support by location across US and international third-party logistics providers, and reconcile it to the general ledger.
  • Build and reconcile deferred revenue schedules across the revenue accounts on a daily-proration basis.
  • Prepare the retained-earnings roll-forward, leasehold-improvement support, and income tax provision support for the open audit years, and support consolidation of HBI EU Technologies (Serbia) into a consolidated trial balance.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field from an accredited institution.
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience in accounting or finance, with a strong preference for CPA designation.
  • Exceptional accounting and bookkeeping skills, including a thorough understanding of the conceptual accounting framework and natural balances.
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel and data management/analysis skills, with a willingness to become conversant with Power Pivot and Power Query within the first sixty days (training provided).
  • Experience with QuickBooks or similar accounting systems preferred.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and technological skills, coupled with a passion for delivering error-free work.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work cross-functionally and thrive in a startup environment.
  • Hands-on, demonstrated experience using Claude or another AI assistant to perform accounting or finance automation work. This is concrete prior experience, not familiarity, and is a core requirement of the role.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and, importantly, document automated processes so that another accountant can run and maintain them.
  • Comfort applying controls to AI-assisted and automated work (review points, validation, and version control) and working within data-security and governance policies.
  • Preferred (strong pluses). Python, SQL and experience integrating data across systems via APIs; experience rebuilding subledgers or building ETLs; Power BI or similar reporting experience; and a public accounting or audit background, especially first-year or clean-up audits.

Tools you will use:

Python (pandas), Excel and Power Query, Claude for Excel, Claude Code, AI agents and the Anthropic API, and the company's QuickBooks and finance systems.
