Contract Details
- Temporary independent contractor engagement.
- Anticipated workload of approximately 30–40 hours per week.
- Contract expected to continue through December 31, 2026.
- This is a 1099 independent contractor position and is not eligible for employee benefits.
Key Responsibilities
Core Underwriting Execution
- Review, assess, and underwrite new business and renewal submissions across homeowners and other residential property lines.
- Handle ongoing underwriting work, including inspection reviews, endorsements, system tasks, and related activities.
- Meet established production expectations for the Associate Underwriter function.
- Apply sound judgment when evaluating property risk characteristics in relation to underwriting guidelines and risk appetite.
- Identify and select profitable risks aligned with company goals while avoiding adverse selection.
Authority Level
- Adhere to established underwriting and process guidelines, including applicable effective-date requirements.
- Refer guideline exceptions to an Underwriter or Senior Underwriter for approval.
Agent Communication
- Serve as an underwriting contact for appointed agents by responding to questions, clarifying risk appetite, and supporting quality submissions.
- Provide timely and professional communication to external distribution partners and internal stakeholders.
- Collaborate with the distribution team to provide underwriting support or training as needed.
Required Skills and Experience
- Active California Property & Casualty (P&C) license required.
- 2–4 years of property underwriting or related personal lines insurance experience, preferably focused on homeowners, dwelling fire, or other residential property lines.
- Experience with risk selection, underwriting execution, claims, customer service, or other related personal lines insurance functions.
- Strong communication skills with a customer-service mindset when working with agents and producers.
- Experience using underwriting platforms, exposure tools, or BI dashboards.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and collaborate effectively.
- Strong attention to detail and sound judgment in balancing risk and business objectives.
- Proficiency with Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Adobe, and other standard business software.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Industry designations such as CPCU or ARM.
- Familiarity with California property underwriting.
- Familiarity with wildfire, hurricane, or other catastrophe-exposed risks.
- Experience within MGA, E&S, or non-admitted environments.
- Commercial property experience.
- Interest in improving underwriting workflows and processes.
- Interest in how climate and data are reshaping insurance risk.
