Summary:

The Medical Laboratory Technologist is responsible for performing laboratory testing and phlebotomy services to support the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. The role ensures accurate specimen handling, testing, result reporting, equipment maintenance, inventory management, and compliance with quality, safety, and regulatory standards. The position also provides customer service and administrative support to ensure the efficient operation of the laboratory.


Key Responsibilities: 

  • Receive, assess, accession, and prepare laboratory specimens for testing.
  • Perform laboratory analyses using approved methods and interpret test results, including confirmatory testing where required.
  • Report laboratory results accurately while maintaining patient confidentiality.
  • Perform phlebotomy procedures and ensure proper patient identification, specimen collection, and labeling.
  • Operate, maintain, calibrate, troubleshoot, and validate laboratory equipment.
  • Monitor laboratory inventory and notify management of low or expiring stock.
  • Comply with laboratory policies, quality standards, infection prevention, and occupational health and safety requirements, including proper use of PPE.
  • Assist with equipment validation and quality assurance activities.
  • Process payments, maintain sales records, and perform basic administrative duties, including answering telephone inquiries.
  • Support the Laboratory Manager and Quality Manager with additional duties as required.


Skills, Qualifications & Experience: 

  • Certificate/Diploma in Medical Technology or Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) or Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, or an equivalent qualification in a relevant scientific discipline.
  • Current licensing with the Barbados Paramedical Council.
  • Proficiency in phlebotomy and laboratory testing procedures.
  • Strong knowledge of laboratory quality assurance, specimen management, equipment maintenance, and safety protocols.
  • Computer literacy with proficiency in Microsoft Office, internet, email, and accounting software.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to accurately analyze, interpret, and document laboratory results.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Adaptable, organized, and capable of working effectively in a fast-paced environment while responding to urgent situations without compromising quality.
