Communications Intern
Position Summary
The Allegheny County Department of Human Services (DHS) is seeking a Communications Intern to support social media strategy and other strategic priorities for the Department. Working directly with the Public Information Officer, the intern will develop content for the Department’s social media channels and public website to promote DHS’ programs to a range of audiences, and provide additional support in preparing for public events and announcements, participating in marketing planning, and other work as needed.
This opportunity is ideal for students interested in both making an impact at a large local government agency with a reputation for innovative leadership and in gaining hands-on experience in an active professional communications environment. Students pursuing Communications, Journalism, or other related fields will have the opportunity to learn by working side-by-side with a small team of experienced professionals.
Responsibilities
The Communications Intern will:
- Assist in creation and implementation of revamped social media strategy, creating content, monitoring engagement, and identifying opportunities to grow followership.
- Work with Public Information Officer to develop recommendations for adding additional photography and other graphic elements to DHS website, using department archives and stock photography resources.
- Provide ongoing support for DHS marketing and communications efforts as needed, including support for public events, media research and monitoring, and background research to support communications initiatives.
- Participate in regular planning meetings to shape social media and other communications and marketing efforts.
- Other duties as assigned by Public Information Officer.
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program.
- Students pursuing one or more of the following fields are especially encouraged to apply:

Successful candidates will demonstrate:
- Excellent written communication skills.
- Strong familiarity with social media dynamics
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Microsoft Office.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines.
Additional Requirements
- Allegheny County residency (local student address).
- Candidates receiving a final offer of employment must successfully complete a background check.
