Drake & Associates is a growing financial planning firm based in Waukesha, WI, dedicated to providing exceptional financial guidance and delivering the ultimate client experience. As we continue to grow, we’re investing in technology, automation, and AI to improve how our team works and how we serve our clients.
We are looking for a motivated Software Engineering & AI Intern who wants hands-on experience building real technology in a growing financial services firm. This is a flexible, full- or part-time internship opportunity.
Position Summary
As a Software Engineering & AI Intern, you’ll work directly alongside the engineer leading our internal technology platform and gain hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure, AI-assisted software development, application integrations, and internal technology projects.
This is a build-focused internship, not a shadowing program. You’ll contribute to applications and technology used by our internal team while learning how software is developed, tested, deployed, and managed within a regulated financial services environment.
Our technology environment includes Google Cloud, Google Workspace, Gemini Enterprise AI tools, Salesforce, and custom applications built for our advisory and operations teams.
What You’ll Do
- Depending on your experience and interests, you may:
- Assist with building and maintaining cloud infrastructure within Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
- Develop and test features for internal web applications using AI-assisted development tools.
- Translate business needs into clear technical requirements and use AI tools to help develop solutions.
- Review, test, troubleshoot, and improve AI-generated code.
- Assist with API integrations and automation between internal systems, including Salesforce.
- Support application testing, validation, and new technology rollouts.
- Work with databases, containerized applications, and deployment processes.
- Assist with Google Workspace migration and technology implementation projects.
- Create technical documentation, runbooks, build guides, and user resources.
- Support security testing and remediation efforts.
- Contribute to special technology and AI projects as the firm's internal platform continues to grow.
What We’re Looking For
- Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field; rising junior, senior, or graduate student preferred.
- Proficiency in at least one server-side programming language, preferably Python or JavaScript/Node.js.
- Working knowledge of SQL and relational databases.
- Comfortable using Git, command-line tools, and basic shell scripts.
- Understanding of core web concepts such as HTTP, REST APIs, authentication, and environment configuration.
- Experience using AI-assisted coding tools such as Gemini, Claude, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or similar.
- Ability to critically review, test, and troubleshoot AI-generated code rather than relying on generated output alone.
- Strong written communication and documentation skills.
- Detail-oriented with sound judgment when working with sensitive or confidential information.
- Eager to learn, solve problems, and contribute in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience building a meaningful project using AI-assisted development tools.
- Exposure to Google Cloud Platform, AWS, or Microsoft Azure.
- Familiarity with Docker and container-based deployments.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines.
- Exposure to Salesforce, including Apex, Lightning Web Components, or REST APIs.
- Experience with Google Workspace administration.
- Understanding of security fundamentals such as secrets management, least-privilege access, and input validation.
- Interest in finance, wealth management, or financial modeling.
What You’ll Gain
- Hands-on experience building and supporting technology used in a real business environment.
- Practical experience with cloud infrastructure, application development, integrations, and AI.
- Experience using AI-assisted development tools as part of a modern software development workflow.
- Opportunities to build and ship work that is used by our internal team.
- Exposure to technology and security requirements within a regulated financial services firm.
- Direct mentorship from the engineer leading our internal technology platform.
- A defined project you can take ownership of from development through implementation.
