Afterschool Group Leader - ExpandEd

Position Summary

The Southern Queens Parks Association is looking for a dynamic individual to join the team as a Group Leader at the ExpandED afterschool program at P.S. 118Q, Lorraine Hansberry School. Group leaders support students (grades K-8) in homework assistance, academic instruction, and enrichment activities. In this role, you’ll work with small student groups in core subjects—English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies—and assist with physical education, visual arts, and performing arts activities.

This innovative program serves elementary-aged youth through structured, club-style programming designed to promote academic success, personal development, and leadership skills. Programming includes enrichment in the arts, sports, youth leadership, and experiential learning throughout NYC. The program operates five days a week during the school year and offers extended services during the summer. This site functions under SQPA’s broader mission and benefits from the organization’s rich network of facilities, programs, and leadership.

 

Key Responsibilities

✔️ Provides general supervision of students during program operating times and ensures that the participants are always safe; Keep all activities, equipment, and facilities clean, sanitized, safe, and in working order.

✔️ Provides positive feedback on the students’ progress and encourages students continued progress towards academic excellence and accountability. Presents themselves as a role model for student participants, at all times.

✔️ Understands, articulates, and utilizes the DYCD core competencies in conjunction with instruction and planning.

✔️Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.
✔️ Maintains regular open communication with parents, staff, and direct supervisors; Report any incidents and concerns to the assistant site program director and site program director.

✔️ Perform other projects assigned at the discretion of the assistant site program director and site program director.
Essential Functions:
✔️ Implement the After School curriculum, helping scholars to improve literacy competencies, values and physical fitness in an activity based after school environment.
✔️ Ensure the health, safety and well-being of scholars in the program by providing close supervision of all activities
✔️ Maintain accurate program documentation (incident reports, accident report, behavior logs, attendance & sign-in/sign-out sheets)
✔️ Assist scholars with homework
✔️ Plan and create innovative age-appropriate activities and develop lesson plans to conduct them on a daily basis
✔️ Provide support to any Activity Specialist in implementing activities
✔️ Adhere to all DOH& DYCD Standards

Schedule

📅 Includes 13 full program days during the academic year (7–8-hour shifts on these days)

💼 Job Type: Part-time (In-Person)
💰 Compensation: $18 per hour
⏳ Hours: Approximately 15-20 hours per week
