Workday application status meanings, without the guesswork

In Progress, Under Consideration, and Process Complete sound precise. They are not universal. Here is what each common status can support, what it cannot prove, and what to do next.

By the Apply Guy teamReviewed Based on Workday and employer documentation
The short answer

Workday statuses are employer-configured clues, not a universal hiring timeline.

Workday lets employers configure recruiting stages, candidate-facing labels, and when updates appear. A specific email, interview invitation, assessment, or offer task is more authoritative than a generic portal label.

Where to check
  1. 1. Sign in to the employer's Workday career site.
  2. 2. Open Candidate Home, then My Applications.
  3. 3. Check the application, outstanding tasks, and your email.

Quick reference

What each Workday application status usually means

“Usually” matters here. The safest interpretation is the narrowest one supported by the label—not the most hopeful or pessimistic story you can attach to it.

Common Workday application statuses, their safest interpretations, what they do not prove, and recommended next actions
StatusSafest interpretationWhat it does not proveWhat to do
Application Received / SubmittedThe employer's Workday site recorded your application. It does not prove a recruiter opened or reviewed your résumé.Keep the confirmation email and check Candidate Home for any new task.
Review / Under ReviewThe application is commonly in an early review stage or waiting to enter one.A candidate-facing label does not prove that a person has completed the review.Watch for a screening request, assessment, or status change while continuing your search.
In Progress / In ProcessThe employer still presents the application as active somewhere in its configured process. It does not identify one universal stage. Review, screening, assessment, and interview activity can all sit behind a generic label.Check both Candidate Home tasks and email; a specific invitation matters more than the label.
Under ConsiderationThe employer generally still treats the application as active. It does not prove you passed a screen, made a shortlist, or had your résumé read by a hiring manager.Treat it as active but noncommittal. Continue applying until the employer sends a concrete next step.
Screen / AssessmentThe employer may be checking qualifications or asking you to complete an evaluation. It is not an interview or offer unless the employer explicitly says so.Open Candidate Home and your email promptly in case there is a dated task.
InterviewThe application may have reached an interview stage in the employer's workflow. The portal label alone is not an invitation or confirmed time.Use the scheduling task or recruiter message as the authoritative confirmation.
Reference Check / Background CheckThe employer may have a reference or background-verification subprocess active. It is positive progress, but it is not a final offer or guaranteed hire.Complete requested forms accurately and follow the employer's deadlines.
Offer / Ready for HireThe application is in a late Workday stage associated with an offer or the transition into hiring. It does not replace a formal offer letter, accepted terms, cleared contingencies, or a confirmed start date.Review the formal task or letter and confirm details directly with the employer.
Process Complete / CompletedThe employer's configured application process is no longer moving through an active stage. The wording alone does not distinguish rejection, a canceled requisition, hiring, or another completed outcome.Check whether the application moved to an inactive tab and look for a specific email or task before drawing a conclusion.
No Longer Under Consideration / Not SelectedThe employer has removed the application from active consideration. It usually does not explain the reason, and rare employer-side reactivations are technically possible.Archive the application, save any useful notes, and move on unless the employer contacts you directly.
WithdrawnThe candidacy is recorded as withdrawn and is no longer active. The label alone may not tell you whether the candidate or an authorized recruiting user recorded the withdrawal.Contact the employer if you did not intend to withdraw or believe the status is wrong.
HiredThis is a specific terminal label indicating the employer recorded a hire.It does not replace onboarding instructions, completed contingencies, or your confirmed start date.Follow the employer's onboarding tasks and written instructions.

Same software, different language

Why Workday statuses differ by employer

Workday's own recruiting documentation says employers can override the external labels candidates see and configure a delay before a status update appears. Internal stages can also be ordered differently or run in parallel. That is why two companies using Workday can describe similar activity with different words.

UW–Madison

Review appears to candidates as Submitted, other active stages as In Progress, and inactive declined or canceled applications as Completed.

City of Tucson

Its candidate guide uses In Progress, Not Selected, and Hired.

The useful conclusion is not that one employer is right. It is that a status definition from a different company may not describe your application at all.

The most overread label

What Under Consideration means

The safe reading is that your application still appears active under the employer's configuration. It can be encouraging because it is not an explicit rejection, but it does not prove a recruiter reviewed your résumé, that you passed a filter, or that you are on an interview shortlist.

Treat it as permission to remain cautiously interested—not as a reason to pause the rest of your job search.

The most ambiguous label

Does Process Complete mean rejection?

Not automatically. It means the configured process has reached a terminal state, but the phrase alone does not identify that outcome. Employer documentation shows Completed can appear after a decline or canceled requisition, while other employers expose more specific terminal labels such as Not Selected or Hired.

Look for the application under Active or Inactive, then check email and tasks. Without a specific offer or next-step message, do not translate Completed into a hidden positive signal.

While the portal stays quiet

What to do when the status has not changed

Check tasks, not only labels

Assessments, interview scheduling, information requests, and offer documents may appear as Candidate Home tasks.

Trust specific communication

A dated request from the employer is more useful than trying to reverse-engineer a broad status label.

Keep your search moving

There is no universal number of days for a Workday stage. Continue applying unless the employer gives you a concrete reason to stop.

Submission is not hiring progress

What Apply Guy can confirm

Apply Guy reports a Workday application as successful only after the employer's application flow accepts the submission and returns a saved result. That confirms submission—not that a recruiter viewed, advanced, or approved the application. Later hiring outcomes come from the employer's tasks and communication; Apply Guy does not guess them from a portal label.

Common questions

Workday application status FAQ

Is Under Consideration a good sign in Workday?

It is better than an explicit Not Selected status because the employer is still presenting the application as active. It is not proof of a completed human review, shortlist, or interview decision.

Does In Progress mean a recruiter viewed my résumé?

Not necessarily. Employers can use In Progress as a broad external label for several active internal stages. A recruiter message, assessment, or interview invitation is stronger evidence than the label by itself.

Does Process Complete mean I was rejected?

Not always. Completed is an ambiguous terminal label. Some employers use it when an application is declined or a requisition closes, while a different configuration may use it after another completed outcome. Check the active or inactive section and the employer's communication.

Why has my Workday status not changed?

The employer may still be reviewing applications, may expose several internal stages under one external label, or may configure a delay before the candidate-facing status changes. There is no universal Workday timeline.

Where do I find an assessment, interview, or offer task?

Sign in to that employer's Workday Candidate Home, open My Applications, and check the application and task area. Also check the email address used for the application, including spam or promotions folders.

Why this guide avoids universal definitions

We compared Workday's administrator documentation with public candidate-status documentation from employers using Workday. Where those employers use different labels, this guide reports the narrow interpretation their examples support instead of inventing a universal mapping.
